The Speech & Hearing Center's mission is "to enhance quality of life through better communication," and they have been doing so for those in our community who are speech-, language-, and/or hearing-impaired for nearly 62 years. While the organization serves both children and adults, early identification and intervention for young children has always been a targeted focus. The Speech & Hearing Center is the only organization in the area that offers comprehensive services to children with hearing loss.
Being the only agency that offers a sliding fee scale for audiology and speech-language pathology services, the Speech & Hearing Center uses support from organizations and individuals to provide much-needed diagnostic and therapeutic services to individuals, regardless of their ability to fully afford services.
Chattanooga's Kids on the Block uses the power of puppetry to educate children about social concerns and differences, giving them skills to stay safe and healthy. It is one of the oldest, most active and respected troupes in the United States. The troupe has been named 2012 and 2005 Non Profit of the Year by the Chattanooga Area Chamber of Commerce.
The troupe serves 16 counties in Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia, performing an average of over 300 educational programs and serving over 45,000 children and adults annually. Our educational programs focus on sensitive issues such as child abuse, bullying, accepting differences, mental health, healthy eating and exercise, anger management, gangs and violence, bereavement, alcohol, tobacco and prescription drugs, deafness, organ donation, respect of others and one's self and communication among other topics.
The highly trained puppeteers use a form of puppetry called Bunraku. They are dressed in black and become shadows behind the puppet. The puppets have distinctive personalities and portray, through carefully scripted material, a world of real life situations. As our puppets come to life, children identify with them and open up to them as if they were trusted friends. Our hope is to prevent problems before they happen. We want to empower children, teaching them the skills to stay safe and healthy.
Chattanooga's Kids on the Block is a licensed child abuse prevention agency in the state of Tennessee.
